Kennis van de Nederlandse MaatschappijKNM: the exam about Dutch society

KNM is one of the parts of the inburgering exam. It checks whether you understand how things work here: work, housing, dealing with official bodies, and being a citizen. Below you'll find what the exam looks like now, and ten practice questions in Dutch.

  • 40 questions
  • 45 minutes
  • 28 correct to pass
  • On a computer, in Dutch

Wat is er veranderd? The exam changed on 1 July 2025

The old exam asked a lot about how you're expected to behave. The new one asks more about why things work the way they do. It's built around four everyday situations, and some topics are new, such as DigiD and the history of the Second World War and the Holocaust.

  • WerkenWork

For example: finding a job, contracts, salary and tax, what an employer and a trade union do, and what happens if you lose your job.

  • WonenHousing

For example: renting, registering with the gemeente, neighbours, bills, waste and energy, and getting around.

  • Contact met instantiesDealing with official bodies

For example: the huisarts and health insurance, school and childcare, DigiD, letters from the government, and where to go with a question.

  • BurgerschapBeing a citizen

For example: how the government and elections work, the constitution, equal rights and the freedom to choose your own life, history, and Dutch holidays and traditions.

The DUO practice exams have been updated for the new version. You'll find the links on my practice page.

OefenenTry ten practice questions

I wrote these myself to practise with. They're in Dutch, like the real exam, with four options per question. You need 7 out of 10 to pass, the same 70% as the real exam. After each answer you'll see a short explanation.
