Voor wie zijn de lessen?Who the lessons are for

  • New in the NetherlandsA1 to B1

You live here now and you'd like to manage at the huisarts, at your child's school or with the neighbours without switching to English. We start from your own week: the letters you get, the people you talk to.

  • InburgeringB1, or A2 under the old law

If your inburgering started on or after 1 January 2022, the language level is B1. We work on reading, listening, writing and speaking, and on KNM, at a pace that fits your deadline. Not sure which rules apply to you? Check the letter from DUO or your gemeente.

  • MVV basic exam abroadA1, at the embassy

Before you can join your partner or family here, you usually have to pass the basisexamen inburgering buitenland. It tests speaking, reading and KNS. You can do all the preparation online from your home country.

Hoe gaan de lessen? How the lessons work

We speak Dutch

From the first lesson, the lesson itself is in Dutch. That sounds like a lot when you're a beginner, but it works: you hear Dutch for a full hour and you answer in Dutch, slowly at first and then less slowly.

When something really needs explaining, a grammar point for example, I switch to English for a moment and then go back. I don't teach in Arabic, Turkish or other languages.

Exams and everyday life

For the MVV exam I use Naar Nederland, the official self-study pack. For KNM I use Welkom in Nederland, and for reading and writing Klare Taal.

But an exam is only part of it. We also practise the conversations you actually have: on the phone with the gemeente, at the pharmacy, at a parents' evening.

Before I started teaching Dutch, I trained in music technology. It helps more than you'd think: a lot of language learning is rhythm and repetition, hearing a sentence often enough that it starts to sound normal in your own mouth.

Wat is er nieuw? What's changed in inburgering

The rules change more often than most people realise. A few recent ones:

  • The KNM exam is different since 1 July 2025.
  • Since 1 January 2026 your inburgering diploma is digital.
  • Results for Speaking A2 and Writing A2 can now take up to 16 weeks.
  • The government wants a 10-year wait for naturalisation. It isn't law yet.

Wat kost een les? What a lesson costs

You pay per lesson. There's no package to buy and no contract, so you can stop whenever you like. Most people find one or two lessons a week at a fixed time works best, but we'll plan around your schedule. Lessons are on Zoom; a lesson in person is sometimes possible on request.

Geert, smiling, in a green hoodie

Wie ben ik?About me

I'm Geert. I was born and raised in the Netherlands, so Dutch is my first language, with all its odd spellings, sounds and habits that nobody ever explains.

I teach levels A1, A2 and B1, because that's where most people are when they're building a life here. Every lesson is 1-on-1 on Zoom, so we go at your speed and spend our time on what you find difficult, not on what a group needs.

If you'd like to know whether we're a good fit, just book a first lesson and see.

VragenQuestions people ask

Are the lessons in Dutch or English?

In Dutch. I use English briefly when something really needs explaining, then we go back to Dutch. The lessons are not given in other languages.

Do I have to do the inburgering exam, and at which level?

Most people from outside the EU who come to live here permanently have to. If your inburgering started on or after 1 January 2022 you fall under the Wet inburgering 2021, where the standard level is B1. If you started earlier, the 2013 law applies, with A2. Your letter from DUO or the gemeente says which one is yours. Recent changes are on the what's new page.

What is the MVV basic exam?

The MVV is the entry visa for people who come to live in the Netherlands, for example to join a partner. Most applicants first have to pass the basisexamen inburgering buitenland at a Dutch embassy. It tests speaking and reading at A1, and knowledge of Dutch society (KNS). I prepare people for it online.

Can I start as a complete beginner?

Yes. You don't need to know any Dutch. We start with sounds, greetings and the words you need in your first week here.

How long will it take to pass?

It depends on where you start, how much time you have and which level you need. B1 takes a lot longer than A2. After the first lesson I can give you an honest estimate.

Are the lessons online?

Yes, on Zoom. You need a laptop or tablet with a camera and a quiet place to talk. Now and then a lesson in person is possible. If you'd like that, mention it when you get in touch.
